In organizations that contain more than a dozen servers it is typical to consolidate storage onto a single appliance or group of appliances so as to increase flexibility while lowering complexity and costs. In keeping with the single protocol ideal of the ISI Stack, ISI's storage solution utilizes IP and iSCSI to provision storage directly over the network using standardized IP and Ethernet connections. The benefits of using this platform versus legacy Fiber Channel implementations are as follows:
- Complete Layer 3 capability - Unlike Fiber Channel, IP has the ability to route packets across segmented networks easily to enable disaster recovery and replication via any IP link
- Virtualization - Again, unlike Fiber Channel an IP storage solution allows a group of arrays to be pooled together as a single array, thereby allowing the storage system to be scaled linearly for throughput and capacity without the necessity of forklift upgrades
ISI recommends, resells, and installs IP based storage solutions manufactured by EqualLogic, Inc.
